Stop Paying Union Dues You Don't Want to Pay

The Supreme Court's Janus decision gave public employees the right to leave their union. We make it easy by handling the entire process - from paperwork to certified mail delivery.

Why Opt Out?

The Supreme Court recognized what many public employees already knew: union dues fund far more than workplace representation.

The Janus Decision

In June 2018, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in Janus v. AFSCME that forcing public employees to pay union fees violates the First Amendment. The Court recognized that public sector union activity is inherently political - from lobbying for higher taxes to funding political campaigns - and that compelling speech through mandatory dues is unconstitutional.

“Compelling individuals to mouth support for views they find objectionable violates [the] cardinal constitutional command” of free speech.— Justice Samuel Alito, Janus v. AFSCME

Political Spending You Don't Control

Public sector unions spend hundreds of millions on political campaigns, lobbying, and advocacy - often for causes and candidates that members personally oppose. The CTU alone spent over $2 million on political contributions in recent election cycles, separate from what members might choose to donate themselves.

Where Your Dues Actually Go

Union financial disclosures show that a significant portion of dues fund activities unrelated to collective bargaining: political action committees, social justice campaigns, donations to activist organizations, and lobbying for policies that extend well beyond workplace issues.

Policies That Hurt Members

Unions often advocate for policies their own members disagree with. Teachers who wanted schools open during COVID saw their unions fight to keep them closed. Police officers watch their unions stay silent - or worse - on public safety issues that affect their daily work.

Your Constitutional Right

The First Amendment protects your right to not fund speech you disagree with. Before Janus, public employees had no choice - now you do. Your job, benefits, and protections remain exactly the same whether you're a member or not.

What Opting Out Usually Looks Like

Unions don't make leaving easy. Here's what most people face when trying to exercise their Janus rights:

1

Find the right address - which may differ from what's on your pay stub

2

Navigate opt-out windows - some unions only accept resignations during narrow timeframes

3

Notify multiple parties - the local, the parent union, AND your employer's HR

4

Get proof of delivery - or risk the “we never received it” excuse
